My dog's vet recommends she be fed only with a dry kibble-type food called "MediCal" Preventive Formula which is apparently made by a Guelph, Ontario company using the trademark VMD. It is available only from vets and is quite expensive. I can't find any comparative info about it online. Is it a very profitable sideline for my vet? Is it REALLY better than less expensive food available at regular pet food stores?

There are better, less expensive foods out there provided there isn't a medical reason that they are suggesting this food. Do a little research and talk to some people in stores that sell healthy dog foods. The best food is the one your dog does the best on ;)

I had Twister on Medi-cal when he had surgery on the advise of the Vet, who also sells it.. There's nothing wrong with it, but I don't believe it's any better than other premium kibbles out there.. It's important to remember that alot of vet's are taught about Medi-cal and Dr Hills while in school, by the company's that make them. I'm not saying a vet is pushing it for profit, merely that they recommend it because they know the product well, and can identify the "make up" of it when looking after your dog. This doesn't mean it's the best thing, just that it's the food the vet is most knowledgeable about. I've had Twister on it a few times and never saw any postive changes as a result..but no negitive ones either.... aside from farting.. eek

This is a cat person talking: I find the MediCal no higher priced than any of the other high end (premium) kibbles out there. We have used some of it on Boo to no avail - and he really isn't fussy about it. We have had to use their tinned Gastro and A/D on both Pepper and Boo at different times. Pepper will knock it back ('natch!) but Boo really doesn't like it. In just my opinion, I think that your vet has recommended it to know what your pet is eating. That helps them when trying to determine a diagnosis and since they are already familiar with the product.....
