On the back of Anakin's leg, he has this small lump, about the size of a quarter (round), it feels like a soft marble sized lump under his skin. We took him to the vet and the vet said something like he wouldn't worry about it (was a while ago). Well now the lump is a little bit bigger... Anakin doesn't notice or mind, and it is still the same shape etc. Anyone have any opinions? We can't really afford to have it removed, but I'm worried it may be cancerous. It has been there for a full year now and hasn't grown much, so I'm hopeful it is a normal thing for dogs.

My old german sheppard (brutus RIP), had lots of random bumps, but they were more topical from clogged pores, and would break occassional (like dog zits lol). I know it isn't that, this is deeper under the skin.

Any feedback would be appreciated by both myself, and by Aniken ;)

cheers!
mike

Ask the vet if it is cancerous(mulignant)or not cancerous(benign).

Hi Mike, Have you checked your dogs lymph nodes? In the front armpits, both sides of the neck and the rear legs..basically in the groin area where the legs attach to the body. One positive thought is this..if he's had it for a year it probably isn't cancer. It is getting bigger though so that is a concern. Did the vet draw fluid from it to test it? Good luck!Keep us posted.

is it squishy and can be moved around easily? My dog, almost 10 years old, Chief has one on his ribs but we can't afford to have to checked out with blood tests and stuff. I can move it around and it is not very hard or attatch to anything. It does not bother him so we figure it is probably just a cyst. Might be the same on your dog. if it has not grown much it is probably just a cyst.

Our little stud muffin Max has lumps all over at age 14.The vet always checks them my giving them a squish. He said that the cancerous lumps are quite hard and that these lumps are generally just a build up of fat tissue that grow bigger over time and suggested not to remove them unless they become cumbersome to the dog.I hope that helps a little.

the rule is it you can feel it moving then it is not cancerous, if it feels attach to something then it might be not necessarily it is but that is just the rule .

I would ask the vet to do a biopsy of the lump. It shouldn't be that hard to do.

When my dog was 6 years old (2001), I found a small lump in his mouth. I was told not to worry about it if it didn't increase in size.
He was ok until December 2005 when he started to lose weight. That's when we noticed that he had other smaller lumps (different sizes - ranging from a few mm to 1-2 inches in size) on his body as well. We eventually found a BIG tumor in his liver (around 6-8 inches).
The vet thinks that either: 1) the smaller tumors in his body were actually metastatic lesions from the tumor in his liver, or 2) it could also be the other way around, the small tumor in his mouth could have spread to his body.
Some tumors were fixed under the skin & some were movable. Most of them were pretty firm nodules & were smooth. Some were red in color, and others were almost black.
If I had biopsied the lump in his mouth, we would've found out back then that it was part of a malignant lesion, and would have been able to treat it earlier.

Don't mean to scare you.. It could just be a fatty (benign) tumor. But you never really know.
A biopsy is something that can easily be done. They take a small chunk out of the tumor & it can usually be done on an outpatient basis.
It might leave a small scar, but at least you'll know for sure if it's benign or malignant.

Venus has had a few lumps over the years. Some were cancer but luckily none spread. I'm paranoid. If there is a lump, it's getting removed. Every pay I put a specific amount of money away for emergency vet fund. It's come in very handy.

When Twister first came to live with me (last Nov) he had alot of lumps... if fact, my "pet"name for him is lumpy! The SPCA said nothing to me about them, and when I asked, they said they were nothing, just fatty cysts.. as did the first vet I took him too, but it just didn't feel "right" to me. Finally I couldn't take my inner voice nagging at me any longer and I took him to a different vet in March. We found out that the one lumps, that was a harder mass, and had a shape to it was cancer. The Vet removed 6 lumps all together and found that the ones that you could move around and feel like little sacs, almost like a blister under the skin are just fatty tissue.

I'm not trying to scare you and the lump you've found could very well just be a cyst...I know it's costly, but if there's anyway you can have it looked into, it's well worth it. I sleep alot better now knowing I listened to the voices in my head. Alot of Vets take payments, or will try to help with costs if you talk to them... if you'd like, I can give you the name of my Vet, he was wonderful and very open and honest about cost and options etc. He even did a free dental on Twister when he was removing the lumps. (that gave me alot of hope, cause I figured he wouldn't have spend the time cleaning his teeth if he was really sick)
Through blood work, biopsies , x rays and alot of praying , we know that for now Twister is doing good. I'm taking him back for a check up in 4 months where they will xray his organs to ensure nothing has spread.

It was costly, but the peace of mind was worth it, even if I didn't get to do much of anything for a few months after!

I feel like rainman here, going on and on about my darn dog..

I'll shut up now!

Let me know if you want our Vet info!

hey my name's Lyndsay. i'm not a vet, but i work at a vet hospital so i have some knowledge. if it's like a marble and not attached then it doesn't sound like a lipoma (fat lump). when your vet looked at it did they do an fna (poke with a syringe a draw back to check for substance). weird colored fluid like puss can mean its just a cyst (sebaceous or otherwise harmless). blood can be a little more serious, but not necessarily harmful. if an fna wasn't done then i would ask for one. they usually aren't very expensive and can provide some answers. it is better and less expensive if removed while still small. i have seen lumps/masses that start out small and the owner either refuses to remove it or can't afford to and then it gets to the point where it is so big, but harmless that it is either way too expensive or impossible to remove so the animal is then euthanized. please don't let it get to that point. if it isn't bothering him now. take some time to save some money for the surgery or talk to your vet about a payment plan. there are many vet's willing to help if only more clients would just ask. hope i have helped.

My dog also has a cyst like or lump on the left side near his arm pit on his left peck/ chest area if dogs had pecks thats where it is lol...anyways i am soo worried about it its not hard but its not like super squishy it is squeezable though and i think i can move it...well it feels like im moving it when i attempt it. I dont have money to take him to the vet but I do wanna get it checked out or like a test where they take fluid from it to see what it could be. Clearly im freaked about it and i just need reassurance from someone who has ever dealt with this before!?! lol im just scared it could be something bad and maybe im not doing enough for him...anyways if someone could help me in anyway that would be soo appreciated!!
